Shantherapy Project

One of the most effective treatment tools at Shanti House is the Shantherapy Project, that combines classes, alternative therapies and enrichment workshops.  The project has been running since 1998, in the afternoons, and is open, free of charge, to non-resident youth.

The Shantherapy Project greatly contributes to the children’s rehabilitation and character building, and is a safe way to release anger, sadness and frustration, as well as being a source of much interest and enjoyment.

Furthermore, the activities help provide a feeling of belonging and responsibility and generate integration and equality between the resident youngsters and those from the community.

Classes

The classes at Shanti House are varied and their content is rich and suited to the youtng people's interests.  Each boy and girl must take part in two classes per week, according to their choice and preference.
Through exposure to new ideas and experiences, they help to widen horizons, while enabliing the shedding of defenses and masks.

Insistence on punctuality develops a sense of responsibility and commitment. Connection with the group leaders strengthens belief in others and teaches how to create healthy personal relationships.

The programme framework and therapies include: arts, psychodrama, cinema, drumming, Flamenco dance, creative writing, and more

Alternative Therapies

Within the framework of alternative therapies (carried out fully clothed) the youngsters learn, that touch is not painful or threatening, and most important – is carried out by their own free will; they decide where they will be treated and how, where they can be touched and when, thus helping them regain control over their own bodies and a sense of basic security that was taken from them many times during their young lives.  These treatments are particularly helpful for those who were sexually and physically abused, resulting in trauma and depression.  The calming, physical touch is a healthy and positive experience for them and even allows them to touch their souls, without words.
Treatments include homeopathy, shiatsu, healing, Reiki, reflexology and more.

Workshops and Enrichment Activities

The Shantherapy Centre holds regular workshops aimed at helping the youngsters to cope with their pasts and with the challenges of the future, to cope with difficulties and indecisions, to improve self-confidence and self-esteem and to let go of destructive behaviour patterns.
One of Shanti House's leading workshops is the “12 Steps” programme that is aimed, primarily for teens with a tendency to addiction, as well as for all young people.
Participants use tools learned within the Shantherapy project’s framework to contribute to the community and they visit old age homes and hospitals in order to bring some cheer and hope to the hearts of residents and patients.
Giving is part of the treatment process, that diverts the minds of the teens from their painful experiences and provides them with a feeling that they are able to contribute to society, and to contribute as equals.
